Patriots vs. Giants in the Superbowl: Beats War

The highbrows amongst us might scorn the spectacle of Superbowl hoopla and consider the associated rites as primal, even Neanderthal. I wonder though if there isn’t more to it than a way to sell Doritos by an antisocial canine or cars equipped to survive the End of the World.

Perhaps shouting at our televisions, jumping up and stomping at a missed catch, curses at umpires clearly mistaken and chanting hoodoo at the Enemy represents a considerable need on our part to fight wars. In days past, the fiefdom of Boston and that of New York would send their plumed knights in armor to a neutral “field” to slug it out for glory and honor. Today, our armored (helmet, pads) players work to hold a defense and plot an offense to take territory (yards), using a variety of war-like tactics including throwing bombs, in order to take home the booty of victory: jeweled rings, truckloads of money, glory and splendor.

Maybe we should celebrate that our collesiums today are not as bloody as they used to be.

But I still say “thumbs down” to the Giants!!!
